Good people understand the crazies.

Neverland Owner Writes an Open Letter to Community

Thomas J. Barrack Jr. has lived near Neverland Ranch for decades and recently came into ownership of the property, via his private-equity firm, when Jackson defaulted on a loan. Although Jackson partially still had a stake in the land, he moved to a large Holmby Hills estate where he died last week. Now there is a chance a public viewing of Jackson later this week will occur at the ranch in Santa Barbara County, which has officials worried about traffic anywhere Jackson's body is taken. If that happens, the quiet countryside of Santa Ynez Valley could temporarily quintuple (or more!) it's population in a matter of hours, prompting Barrack to write a very poetic open letter to the community (posted below). Also under consideration for a ceremony is the Staples Center, says the LA Times.

An Open Letter to the Santa Barbara Community From Thomas J. Barrack, Jr.
The windswept face of Grass Mountain and the oak tree studded hills of the Santa Ynez Valley are once again the backdrop for a global drama of epic proportion. Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50 on the eve of a universal comeback.

As his family, friends and millions of fans across the globe seek outlets in which to express their grief, Michael’s only true home, the Neverland Ranch, has become a temporary sanctuary where fans and family can still feel the presence of his kind and compassionate soul.

The universal curiosity about Neverland and its connection to Michael is an unchangeable fact. How grieving fans are treated as they arrive to pay their respects will be viewed with great interest by the world. As we all know, the impressions left by Michael’s last interaction with Santa Barbara County were not positive.

Consequently, I would like to simply frame the issue upon which we all need to focus: It is a reality that the world will quickly descend on Santa Barbara and Neverland as fans continue to grieve, and as Michael’s legacy gains perhaps more appreciation after his death than during his life.

We must be prepared for the fact that visitors and fans will come, with or without permission or an invitation. As a consequence, all actions being taken at the moment are aimed at creating a well thought out and coordinated plan amongst the family, the Sheriff, the County regulatory agencies, the fire department, local proprietors, local press, local residents and the Highway Patrol to protect and preserve the interests of all constituencies.

We must also prepare to accommodate Michael’s family’s wishes as they contemplate the location of his final resting place and their own return to the tranquil grounds of the Michael Jackson family compound.

Michael Jackson was accused, tried and acquitted in our county and found innocent on all counts. As Michael’s final arrangements are planned, his family’s wishes should be welcomed by this county with open arms. Let’s adopt an attitude of hospitality, warmth, and tolerance and allow the world to pay their respects to this global icon by conducting ourselves with grace and elegance.

The consideration of the future of the Neverland property will be addressed in due time through normal process and with appropriate deliberation. Right now, the imperative is to be responsive at a sensitive moment in which the world is watching us and observing our conduct as we mourn the loss of one of our own long-time residents.

I have been a horse rancher and farmer in the Santa Ynez Valley for more than three decades and have raised my children to continue the legacy of stewardship and preservation that we all value so highly in this magical valley.

Our peaceful pastures are imbued with a Western tradition of kindness and hospitality, free of fence lines or locked gates. We further flourished from the legacy of a strong Chumash culture and civilization which became the footprints remaining in the minds of all those who visited this majestic world. This is our chance to teach the world what “mi casa es su casa” really means.

Padre Junipero Serra, pioneer California missionary, described the future site of Santa Barbara as a "dismal and treeless" place when he first saw it in April 1782. It has taken the work of generations of dedicated people to create a county known throughout the world for its beauty. Let us all keep in mind that reputations are earned in decades and lost in moments of haste and bad decisions.

Let us allow the world and our visitors to taste a few drops of the magic elixir that is the metaphysical mix between the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley sculpted by the soft hands of God, and the warm and kind environment crafted by the hands of its residents.

RIP my King

As many of you know, I'm a devout Michael Jackson fan. Yesterday was one of the hardest days I've ever had. Can't believe he's no longer with us. Rather than write and say how he impacted my life, I'd like to share some links with you from some other people with whom I share sentiments. Just click on a name below to read their thoughts...

Lyrics of the day

For the past 6 months, I've had the pleasure of fulfilling a New Years resolution- to get back to being me; to remembering what I like, what I don't and where I wanna go next.

"Gardenia"
by Mandy Moore

Well, I put so much thought into getting ready
Now I know that was the best part
It's so easy to get caught up in what I'm regretting
Forget what I got from a wounded heart

[CHORUS]
I'm the one who likes Gardenia
I'm the one who likes to make love on the floor
I don't want to hang up the phone yet
It's been good
Getting to know me more
I've been seeing all my old friends in the city
Walking alone in Central Park
Doing all the things that I've neglected
Traded 'em all in
To be in your arms

[CHORUS]

Well, I hear my own voice
Sounds so silly
Keep on telling my story all around
Everything I lost seems so different
Well, this is how everybody gets found

Are skulls bad luck?

Buff just released one of his newest prints. It's a skull and it's pretty awesome. I want it, only thing is, I'm a bit weary about skulls. I'm not super superstitious or anything, but something's weird to me about having a skull hanging in my place. My friend Erin has this adorable little skull necklace. She refuses to take it off- something about how it's supposed to fall off naturally and when it does, her wish comes true. I don't believe any of that, but it still kinda freaks me out.

This seems like a new direction for Buff considering all his past stuff is cute little x-eyed buggers popping out of boobs. Either way, I can't decide if I want this print. I know if I wait it'll be gone. But still...it's a skull. Grrrr. I'm gonna be so annoyed with myself if the next release is a skull as well. Cuz then I coulda had a set. Ugh- such frustrations in my life.

I have yet to see another commercial that makes me laugh as much as this one does. The albino dolphin one is pretty good, but not as good as Berries and Creme...

I see.

This week has been a bit of a mindfuck. Interviews, plane tickets, testosterone; it's all happening whether I'm alligned with the lunar cycle or not.
Here are some closing thoughts (shit, it's only Wednesday-FML):
-The circle of trust means nothing, if you're not engaging in it.
-Sometimes looks don't matter if he/she makes you feel like you're the only person in the room. Attraction comes with respect.
-Respect is quickly lost if you're not honest.
-If a person seems shady at first impression, he/she is probably a shady mothafucka in general. Keep one eye open.
-Exes are not to be hated. They're role models for what NOT to be like. Take note.
-Sometimes, people need to be with their polar opposite to find their center.
-I'm glad I'm liked for who I am vs. who I'm fucking.
-Remember that someone loves the person you despise. Look for the good things about them, and revel in your commonality.
-If his new chick is grade D, just remember, you had him first. The catch- she's looking to you to set the bar. Set it high.
-I have a feeling that the Boomerang Theory™ will prove to be true at the most inopportune time. Baggage is meant to be unpacked alone. When he finally figures that out, it will definitely be too late...for everyone. Que lastima.

In the words of Samantha James, "People rise together when they believe in tomorrow, change today, to forever, cuz life keeps movin'..."

Lyrics for right now:

A&E

It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain is starting to slip away, hey hey

I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
Think I wan't you still
But there may be pills at work

Do you really wanna know how I was dancing on the floor?
I was trying to phone you when I'm crawling out the door
I'm amazed at you, the things you say that you don't do
Why don't you wreck?

I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I'm walking up surrounded by me
A&E

It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain is starting to slip away, hey hey

I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
Think I wan't you still
But there may be pills at work

How did I get to accident - emergency?
All I wanted was you to take me out high
And I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I hope'd you'd call and hope you'd see me
A&E

Happy Refunding

I used to love JetBlue. Like, really really loved them. Then their prices went up and they started charging for the extra legroom seats, so I hated them for awhile (see this past blog entry). But slowly, they're redeeming themselves. Like this new thing they've got called the JetBlue Promise Program. Basically, if you've gotten laid off this past week and have already purchased a flight, they're offering to refund it! They're the first company I've noticed where rather than just acknowledge the recession and expect people to deal with it, they're doing something about it and looking out for the passenger's well-being. Read all about it HERE.

So LOST

Ok, I've watched this week's episode twice now and I've got some thoughts I have to get down before I forget:
1- The lagoon Jack, Hurley, etc. end up in, is the same lagoon the back end of Oceanic Flight 815 flung some people into. It's the same lagoon where Kate found the gun case and where that hot Brazilian found his bag with the diamonds.
2- Eloise has one of the Virgin Mary's on her desk. The same one that that was found in the small plane that crashed on the island- the one that killed Boone, and had Mr. Eko's brother in it, smuggling heroin. Yes, one of those.
3- I get that on the island, whenever there was a fight, they would walk around with blood on them. Fine. But, how come Ben is walking around in REALITY all banged up like that. He couldn't clean up so well. I mean, come on- if I saw someone covered in blood on Newbury St., I'm pretty sure they'd get stopped.
4- So for all of the recent episodes, Jack's been obsessed with getting back to the island. So how come he so strongly questions and fights against all the stuff Eloise tells him he needs to do to get back?? Why wouldn't he just be like, ok cool, let's go.
5- Where the fuck is Aaron and why doesn't Kate want to talk about him? Is it because Jack hasn't acknowledged it or something? This one confuses me. I'm sure it'll make for a great flashback story...if it's even relevant.
6- Does everyone on the plane end up on the island? Since Ben doesn't care, it makes me think that's important- probably cuz he's lying or something. But why has there been no talk about whether or not Ben will be able to get back on the island? Cuz technically he's just a variable like the rest of the passengers we don't know about. Can he go back and forth from the island via plane?
7- Back in the day, the Others used the sub to get back to the world, right? So why didn't they just get another sub? All this coordinate bullshit didn't mean anything in the past episodes-seems like Ben was reentering all the time! How about all those times we see Richard Alpert in the real world, and then on the island- no way there was a plane (or boat) crash there every time. How did they move back and forth??
8-When Jack's grandpa disappears from the home, is he really turning into Jack's dad and going to the island? HA.
9- Jack first calls his grandpa, "Ray", then switches to "grand dad"- why?? (p.s. the amounts that Jack says "grand dad" is hella annoying)
10- Right- so the grampa just HAPPENED to have had dudeman's shoes? Of all his possessions to take when he leaves the home, that was one of them?
11- They all know they're about to go back and yet, Jack and Kate are just chillin'. Wouldn't you be going crazy?
12- I keep seeing on Lostpedia that people think Ben killed Penny. I get that he calls Jack from the marina, but why would Ben wanna kill Penny? And if it is this, who's the "old friend" he refers to?
13- Kate said she would see Jack at the airport. So why does he seem so surprised that she showed up? And what's with her and the indoor-wearing shades? FAIL.
14- How come no one's concerned with how they're gonna return from the island? They had such a hard time getting rescued last time that you'd think returning would be a huge concern. I mean, Sun just left her baby?!
15- Last time Hurley was reading a comic with polar bears, it foreshadowed the crazy bears on the island, obviously. This time, the comic he's reading is a skeleton in a space suit or something and the helmet says "el ultimo hombre" meaning "the last man." Hmmmm....

And my top question- if they all knew there was a chance they were going back to the island, then why the fuck are they all wearing such redonk clothes. I mean, Jack's wearing a muthafuggin' suit!

P.s. You must check out the website for Ajira Airways HERE. It's pretty robust- way better than the Oceanic site.

The best part- there's a reference to an excursion that mentions swimming with sharks. There's been lots of mention of sharks in the past (I think it was Juliet/Ben who told Jack when he was being held prisoner, that the station they were in was the aquarium or something and Dharma did stuff with dolphins and sharks). There was also a glimpse of Dharma-branded shark on one of the episodes where Jin, Sawyer and Michael are on the raft. God, it'd be awesome if they did an episode with sharks!! Cross your fingers!
